This lesson will cover the 'dative particle'. Not to get too fancy, this simply means they give direction to an action or mark a location or time.
For actions directed to persons or animals, '¿¡°Ô' or 'ÇÑÅ×' is used. In other cases, use '¿¡'. '°Ô' is the honorific form of '¿¡°Ô'. Honorific? Yeah, that just means you should use it when you're talking to someone of higher status. More on this in upcoming Grammar III.
For instance, if you are going to a place, you can attach '¿¡' to the place name to indicate that it's where you're going.
- Çб³¿¡ °©´Ï´Ù.
- I'm going to school.
- (school-to going.)
- ¹ÎÈñ°¡ ºÎ»ê¿¡ °©´Ï´Ù.
- Minhee is going to Pusan.
- (Minhee Pusan-to going.)
What about the '¿¡°Ô' and 'ÇÑÅ×'? To give a direction to a person or animal, use these. For example:
- ¾ö¸¶¿¡°Ô ÀüÈÇß½À´Ï´Ù.
- I called Mother.
- (Mother-to called.)
- ¿ø¼þÀÌÇÑÅ× ¹Ù³ª³ª¸¦ ÁÖ¾î¶ó.
- Give a banana to the monkey.
- (Monkey-to banana give.)
Once again, in all other cases of an action directed at an inanimate object, use '¿¡'.
- ¼¼Å¹±â¿¡ ³Ö¾î¶ó.
- Put it in the washer.
- (washer-in put.)
- â¹®¿¡ ¼ÕÀ» ´ëÁö ¸¶½Ã¿À.
- Please don't touch the window.
- (window-to hand touch don't please.)
Or to indicate the time of an action:
- ¼¼½Ã¿¡ ¼ö¾÷ÀÌ ³¡³².
- Class ends at 3 o' clock.
- (3-at class ends.)
- ¿ì¸®´Â ´ÙÀ½ ÁÖ¸»¿¡ ³îÀ̰ø¿ø¿¡ °¥°Ì´Ï´Ù.
- We're going to the amusement park next weekend.
- (We next weekend-on amusement park-to will go.)
And last but not least, honorific '²²':
- ¾î¸Ó´Ô²² ¼±¹°À» °®´Ù µå·Á¶ó.
- Take the present to Mother.
- (Mother-to present go-give.)
- ÇҾƹöÁö²² ¹°¾îº¸¼¼¿ä.
- Ask Grandfather.
- (Grandfather-to ask-please.)
